Margaret, 70, reverted to Islam over 10 years ago. She had passed away at the Royal London Hospital and her body was yet to be released by the Coroners.
She was childless and on low income. Her distraught husband sought financial and logistical support with the burial.
This is why I started the Muslim Burial Fund
In 2013, after losing my mother, I founded 13 Rivers Trust to support the sick and lonely. That’s when I met Peter Chatfield—a revert Muslim with only months to live. His biggest fear? That his family would bury him as a Christian, against his wishes.
Peter had no one. He asked us for three things: companionship, a legal will to ensure a Muslim burial, and for us to arrange his funeral. Before he passed, he made one final request—that I personally wash his body. I had never done this before, but with guidance, I honoured his wish.
That moment changed everything. It made us realize how many vulnerable Muslims die alone, with no means for a proper burial. What started as a promise to Peter became something greater—the Muslim Burial Fund.
Today, we ensure that no Muslim, regardless of wealth or status, is left in a morgue for months or cremated by the council. Honor their final journey. Give dignity in death.
